Severe Sunburn Remedies
Severe sunburn is quite serious, and should not be ignored. Like any other type of burn, not only is it extremely painful, but the risk of blistering, broken skin leading to infections and even scarring, is very real.
While I was growing up here in Australia, since our father was a school teacher and had the full six weeks of summer holidays, we spent a lot of time at a camping spot on the beach. Unfortunately we had the typical Irish complexion: fair skin and freckles, which meant we burnt easily under the Australian summer sun. I am sure my mother slopped sunscreen over us as we left the campsite in the morning, heading for the beach, but as that would be the last she would see of us for many hours, the sunscreen application was not renewed.
We loved the water and snorkeled happily thinking, in our childish ignorance, that the cool ocean water somehow protected us from the sun’s biting rays. But painful days followed as tender skin normally not exposed to the sun got red and sore. At the time I think we just took it as a normal holiday hazard.
The worst sunburn anyone in our family has experienced happened around this time. My youngest brother, about six years old, fell asleep on his stomach on a towel on the beach. By the time he woke up he had a very severe sunburn, even on the soles of his feet! His body actually went into shock with the severity of the burn: he was vomiting and dehydrated, and my parents had to take him to the nearest hospital.
I can’t recall now whether our holiday was cut short, but I do know this: parents in our modern, sun-aware era can be charged with neglect if they allow their child to get a severe sunburn. Although sunburn is not the only cause of skin cancers later in life, it is known that sunburn damaged skin (especially on the face) is a common trigger of these annoying cancers that have to be surgically removed.
What can you do if you or someone in your family has managed to get quite sunburned? It is important to act quickly to reduce short-term shock reaction by the body, eliminate pain, and avoid any long term effects including skin cancer. Once you have got the affected person resting in a cool bath, make sure they sip a good quantity of water. They should not gulp the water down, even if they are feeling thirsty, as they would be more likely to vomit. The water and the bath will both help avoid dehydration.
